The French War-Chest is Stolen
The unsuspecting magistrate, already in a bad mood, has just gone to bed when another group of 1,500 peasants storm the town and plunder all the houses. The Freudenberg citizens soon grow weary of all this. 50 of these thugs were running around in every house, making the freshly swept floors dirty again, urinating next to the toilets and breaking everything in sight. So they defend themselves and repel the attackers. Towards morning the last uninvited guest has gone at last.
11th September is a Sunday, so our magistrate is pleased that he can finally have a lie in. But once again he is disappointed. This time the French turn up to take revenge on the people of Freudenberg for the theft by burning down the town. As even the magistrate can see that this is a serious matter, he delivers a speech to the gathering of Frenchmen, which they don’t understand because they can’t speak German and the magistrate can’t speak French.
